Freeze Unfreeze (Frost Shattering)
Temperatures need to fluctuate over and below freezing. If the temperature drops below 0 degrees, water collected in rock fractures freezes and expands. When ever temperatures go up again ice melts. Pressure created by simply expansion brings about progressive weakening of the rock and roll. At high altitudes frost-shattered material forms scree slopes. Heating & Cooling
Cold weather expansion & contraction of rock reacting to rising and slipping temperatures. The daily pattern of heating and cooling sets up challenges in the rock and roll that cause it to disintegrate. Happens mostly in deserts where there is the greatest diurnal temperature selection. Also arises during bush fires. Wetting & Drying (Slaking)
Rock is instead wetted then simply dried. Mineral deposits which make up clay rocks expand when wetted, after that contract upon drying-out. The stresses by repeated expansion and contraction cause the rock to disintegrate. This process commonly happens on the intertidal zone of coasts. Exfoliation (Onion weathering/Spheroidal)
Under nice conditions ordinary surfaces warm up and expand more than the primary mass with the internal body of the mountain. Eventually the surface layers divided off or spall from your lower levels, sometimes in slightly bent sheets such as the layers of an onion. Found especially in stone. Crystal Expansion (Salt Weathering)
Salt deposits, such as sodium carbonate and magnesium sulphate grow within just spaces within a rock. It occurs when saline water goes in cracks in rocks in that case evaporates. The growing uric acid prise the rock apart and tiny pieces break-off. This process is specially effective in semi-arid areas and seaside regions. Pressure Release (Dilation)
