Hello! It completely depends on the situation of the casting director you work for. For example, really busy casting offices have assistants on salaries as they work on multiple projects. The majority of assistants in casting and production aren’t so lucky and work on a project-by-project basis.

Hi Olivia

I very much enjoyed reading your blog about working as a casting assistant as I am really interested in getting into this myself. I was wondering if you could offer any advice on how to get started as a casting assistant, where to look for jobs in casting agencies etc. I graduated from Uni with a degree in Media and Television, and am looking at moving to London in the next month or so.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think this is a very helpful story for all young actors. Ignore anything the casting director says! Of course it is lovely if they like what you did, and they will bring you in again if they do, but they do not have hardly any input in the final decision. Also, they are hired to find people so they react positively sometimes in front of the director or the client as if to say ” you see, I’m really good at this job of casting and choosing people!” Everyone is trying to impress everyone. Apart from the client who has to be guided by the advertising creatives to understand how the advert works. Let it go once it’s done, and if it went badly – then reflect on why and move on.
