We are Straight From School, a website for aspiring actors of any age and from any where in the United Kingdom. We believe that in today’s world where everything is instant and where get-rich-quick attitudes are ripe, young people can forget that achieving their goals takes patience, hard work and enthusiasm to learn more about their craft.
The entertainment industry is notoriously difficult to break into as open castings or a one-in-a-million chance of being spotted for your talent are rare opportunities to get professional acting experience. Aspiring actors cannot wait to be given a chance, they must make their own chances. How? By making yourself as knowledgeable as you can about your profession, something that can be done whilst at school or college. You will benefit from your school plays, local drama clubs and short films because you are demonstrating your passion. It is true that you have to be lucky in this industry, but every step you take, however small, is making your own luck. Someone else can’t put your name up in lights, it’s up to you to get yourself there.

Why Straight From School?
What do we mean by ‘Straight From School‘? No, it doesn’t mean you have to be in compulsory education to find this website useful! The title means that we want to help any actor who wants to leave school, college, university or even drama school with an understanding of the acting industry. You can always start contributing to your professional career before you leave education – start now and you’ll be glad you did.
The Website
We’re Olivia and Alice, two ‘twenteens’ based in London, England. The website has been open since July 2006 and since then has changed multiple times in both content and design.
Olivia: Owner and Principal Manager
I’m Olivia, a film school graduate. I am working as a casting assistant for commercials and film. I certainly do not claim to know everything about the industry but the joy of this website means I have and will always be learning more with the site. Straight From School has been wonderful to manage over the past 5 years (5 years already!?) and I am still astounded by those visitors who keep coming back and begin to feel inspired about how to achieve their goals! Thank you for coming back!
Alice: Co-Web and Writer
I’m Alice, a London based acting student. I love reading plays and novels – favourite authors include Daphne du Maurier, Sebastian Faulks, Audrey Niffenegger and Ian McEwan. I took a gap year to travel to Hong Kong and china for a taste in cultural theatre and am currently applying to London drama schools as I want to pursue the a career on the stage. Working on Straight from School is fun because I feel like we’re doing something original, and also I get to share my experiences and (basic) knowledge on the industry with others. Like Olivia, I’m still learning, but I like sharing my auditioning experiences with others on my blog, Knowing Alice.
